September is Hunger Action Month, and with federal pandemic unemployment benefits ending, more people will face difficult decisions about food. Hunger Action Month began in 2008 during the Great Recession, and the need has only increased due to the global pandemic. Now, more than ever, our neighbors in need could use a helping hand.
Here are five things you can do to support neighbors in need this month:
-
Donate to Wholesome Wave Georgia – Our organization is dedicated to feeding food insecure families in Georgia. Every dollar you donate is doubled for SNAP/EBT users at Farmers Markets, so your money goes twice as far!
-
Bring food to a Free99 Fridge or Community Pantry – Free99Fridge is part of a nationwide grassroots effort to assure everyone has access to fresh, nourishing food.
-
Take the SNAP Challenge – The SNAP Challenge was developed by the Food Research & Action Center to show food secure people the realities of what living off of SNAP benefits is actually like.
-
Tell our lawmakers to support strong federal food assistance programs – Speak up to ensure our neighbors in need have access to fresh healthy food.
-
Plant a Row for the Hungry – It’s not too late to get a fall garden started! If you are starting a garden this month, consider creating a row of food specially for donating. Need help starting? Scroll down to check out some upcoming plant sales.
