You can sign up and complete your first stock donation through DonateStock in under 10 minutes. After registration, initiating additional stock gifts takes just 1-2 minutes. Once submitted, the transfer of shares from your account to the nonprofit’s account (via DTC transfer) typically takes 2-5 business days, depending on the speed of your brokerage in processing the transfer. Disbursements to nonprofits occur on the 1st and 15th of each month. You can monitor your donation’s progress in your donor portal.
Yes, you can choose to remain anonymous to the public while still allowing the nonprofit to know your identity. Simply include this preference in the special instructions when you make your donation.
Donors pay no fees, and nonprofits can join and register with DonateStock at no cost. A modest transaction fee, roughly half the cost of credit card transaction fees, is charged to the receiving nonprofit, with a cap on fees for larger donations.
Yes, donations from most mutual funds can be processed, though they may take longer to complete compared to stock donations.
For donations exceeding $25,000, a customer success representative will reach out to verify the gift for added security. We will then submit the transfer request to your brokerage and inform the nonprofit. Your brokerage will transfer the shares to either the nonprofit’s account or DonateStock Charitable (a 501c3), where the shares are sold, and the proceeds are sent to the nonprofit. You’ll receive email confirmations and updates on your donor dashboard at the start and completion of the process.
If the nonprofit chooses to receive the stock directly, they will issue your tax receipt. If they opt for DonateStock to convert the stock to cash and distribute the funds, you’ll receive a tax receipt from DonateStock Charitable for the nonprofit you supported. You can download receipts from your donor dashboard.
Stock donations are final and cannot be altered once the transfer instructions are sent to your broker.
You can check the status of your donation in your donor dashboard by logging in. Typically, it takes 5 business days for shares to transfer from your account to the nonprofit’s via DTC transfer, though delays may occur during high-volume periods like year-end. The timeline depends on your brokerage’s processing speed. Verify in your brokerage account if the shares have been transferred. If more than 5 days have passed and the dashboard doesn’t show “received,” contact DonateStock for assistance.
