Helping Older Adults Transition with Dignity: A Conversation about Housing

Recently, I had the privilege of speaking with a group of older adults living in an income-based housing community. We gathered to discuss a topic that often goes unnoticed but carries a lot of weight: what it’s really like to transition into communal senior living after decades of being rooted in a different kind of community.

Many of these residents shared that their move was overwhelming. Some weren’t fully informed about the documents required, the pace of the process, or even what daily life would look like once they arrived. The shift from a familiar neighborhood to a new environment filled with unknowns can feel disorienting, especially when support is limited.

That conversation inspired something important: the creation of a Transition Guide, a resource designed with older adults, for older adults. This guide will provide clear, compassionate information to help future residents understand what to expect, how to prepare, and how to feel more in control of their journey into income based housing.

It’s about more than logistics. It’s about helping people age gracefully, with dignity, confidence, and real choice.

As we continue building this guide through direct feedback and shared stories, I’m reminded that the best solutions come from those who’ve lived the experience. Their voices will help shape a tool that not only informs, but empowers.

Stay tuned, we’re just getting started.
