Training to Serve the Vulnerable While Depending on SNAP

Carol was in the middle of making a difficult decision.

She was considering going back to school to become a mental health aide, a career focused on helping people during some of the most challenging moments of their lives.

At the same time, Carol was already serving in a caregiving role.

Much of her day is spent caring for someone who depends on her. While she finds purpose in helping others, caregiving also comes with real responsibilities, limited flexibility, and financial challenges.

As she looked into returning to school, one question kept coming up: How do you prepare for a better future while managing the demands of today?

For Carol, SNAP has helped answer that question.

SNAP doesn’t solve every problem, but it helps make sure there is food on the table while she focuses on her next steps. It provides a measure of stability during a season filled with important decisions.

Carol shared that going back to school is about more than finding a job. It’s about finding a way to serve others.

She wants to work with people facing mental health challenges and provide the compassion and support that so many people need during difficult times.

Many people receiving SNAP are actively working toward their future. They are caregivers, students, parents, and professionals in training. They are investing in themselves while continuing to contribute to their communities.

Today, SNAP is helping Carol meet her basic needs. Tomorrow, she hopes to use her education and experience to help others do the same.

Her journey is still unfolding, but her goal is clear: to build a career centered on helping vulnerable people heal, grow, and thrive.

And sometimes, the support that makes that possible starts with something as simple as knowing where your next meal is coming from.
